If the glaciers didn’t stop, they would’ve continued into Lake Tahoe and formed another bay just like Emerald Bay, which is roughly three miles northwest of Fallen Leaf Lake. A terminal moraine, which marks the end of the glaciers’ movements, is noticeable on the north end of the lake. Fallen Leaf Lakeįallen Leaf Lake was formed out of two glaciers that are believed to have traveled north and stopped roughly one mile south of Lake Tahoe.
In addition to the intriguing examination of how the lake got its name, is an even greater mystery that sets this alpine body of water apart from any other lake in the state – the underwater forest of Fallen Leaf Lake. I’m sure for some of you, the thought of a forest at this particular location doesn’t sound all too interesting.īut, what if I told you that this forest is underwater? I bet that’s grabbed your attention. Anyhow until i get the Yosemite gallery done enjoy these ones.At 6,300 feet in elevation, and located at the base of Desolation Wilderness, sits a forest unlike any other. In fact Nevada is the second largest silver producing state in the US. The landscape is very rugged and the area was extensively mined for Gold then Silver for many years. You'll find a lot of urban or rural decay in the photos on the 341 and 342 in the first half of the gallery, it would be an urban/rural decay photographers paradise. I didn't take too many photos in Virginia City and probably should have taken more, oh well it just means i need to go back someday. On day 7 we explored the area around Virginia City Nevada and Virginia City, We started by touring the scenic roads 341 and 342 south of Virginia City then the city and finally the 341 north of the city. I wonder if it will pester the next vacationers who stay in that unit.
When we left early in the morning it was there looking in the window to see if we had more food for it. By the end of the vacation we actually had that particular Jay coming about a meter in the door of the unit at the resort for food.

These birds have personalities and one of them was quite the pig when we put out food, it had the mindset that it couldn't let any of the others have the food and so it would stuff its beak as full as possible and come back as quick as possible for more. Interestingly i recently learns birds don't have blue feathers, the only reason we see blue is that the gaps in the feathers refract blue light but the feathers themselves don't have any blue pigment. On day 6 we didn't do much, however i took the time to photograph the local somewhat friendly Steller's Jays. If we are ever back that way we will be sure to explore those trails more extensively. In fact up to this point this gallery may have my favourite photos from the vacation (to be topped later on with the Yosemite photos). On day 5 we took it easy, found a quiet mountain road near South Lake Tahoe that has access to a couple trails, had it not been evening we might have hiked a couple of those trails but instead we just drove up and then back down the road stopping for great picture opportunities. There are a few other photos from the area around Truckee California we also took that day. The Cascade Falls would have been more spectacular had it been raining in previous days but we have to take what we can get. The Hike also takes you along side the rock face of a mountain making the sun even more punishing. Its not a long hike, and there isn't a lot of difference in altitude between the start and finish however its over 7000ft up and they don't tell you that through this short hike you go up and down a few times making it a bit harder than expected especially if you're not all that fit like me. On day 4 we explored Leaf Lake, Emerald Bay and took a hike to Cascade Falls with views of Cascade Lake during the hike.
